If your dog is eating poop, it could be for a number of reasons, including:
- Anxiety
- Attention
- Isolation
- Confinement
- Inappropriate association with food
- Malnutrition
Almost 99% of the time when your pet is eating their feces, it is behavior related. This can be a very difficult behavior to correct. Speaking to a behavior specialist is a good start to try and pinpoint what could be causing the behavior.
That 1% we are left with could be due to malnutrition. If your dog is eating their feces and you recently changed their food or the quality food is not on standard, try feeding a higher quality food or adding supplements to their daily diet.
Quick Tips:
- Distract your dog after defecation, revert their attention towards you and reward the behavior with over excitement and a delicious doggy treat.
- Pick up the stool immediately after your pooch has made a poop.
- Contact a behavior specialist to help.
